The year is 1994, and for the first time in ages, the Triwizard Tournament is occurring. Hogwarts has been chosen to host this momentous event, much to the delight of its students. Unfortunately, due to previous injuries and deaths, only those of age may submit their name to the Goblet of Fire, vastly reducing the number of students who are able. That doesn't mean that younger students can't try. Also doesn't mean that they'll succeed. What does the Triwizard Tournament have in store for the schools of Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons? Who will be chosen to participate, and most importantly, will they all come out in one piece?

she expected the world but it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep
the library ❧ @anyone ❧ 296 words
Katherine looked down at the book in her hands, quiet sighs escaping her almost every time she flipped a page to get to the next. It was Potions, Potions, and more Potions! Yay! Not... For a long time Potions had been one of her favorite classes but ever since she hadn't got a top grade on the test, she'd been scrambling to study... but it was all so boring.
Being a bookworm, normally Kat would have been glad to spend hours in the library but she had other things on her mind, and wasn't feeling in the mood. Ever since she got that angry letter from her parents, she was feeling on edge, and distracted.
The Slytherin girl closed the book harshly, and shoved it back where she found it. She reached up to tuck back a lock of her brown hair behind her ear before she continued to look for a book on Potions that she hadn't already read.
See, her grades were always great, and the mark she got in the Potions test was fine, but her little sister ratted out to her parents that she got an average mark, and her parents were furious. How do you expect to go anywhere in life if you don't try? Maybe you should get a tutor. The words rang in her head, and she let out a frustrated sigh. Tutor!? She was the tutor!
Katherine let her shoulders relax, realizing she should stop getting so heated for no reason. People in the library would start looking at her strangely if she continued to look so frustrated just standing there. She pulled out another book, and began to read again, but seeing her hair turn red, she sighed. Her metamorphmagi was reacting to her frustration... just great.

Draco walked past the shelves of books, looking for a particular book. It was for Ophelia to help her with potions. He promised he'd talk to Snape about it, and he had. Except it didn't go as planned. Snape seemed to be in a mood and told him that if his girlfriend wanted good grades, she had to work hard for them. Draco tried to explain and in the end he got a recommendation for a book. Well, it was better than nothing. He had to admit that seeing Snape look at him like that frightened him. Draco dismissed himself from his office and went straight to the library. He would show him. Draco would help Ophelia with potions without Snape's help.
There were plenty of people in the library, mostly egg-head Ravenclaws. There weren't a lot of Slytherins there. But he expected as much. Turning down one of the aisles, he spotted a girl with brown frizzy hair. He knew the back of that girl's head from anywhere. That mudblood Granger! It was just like her to be sitting in the library with her nose stuck in between a book. This time, though, no one was with her. She was alone. He walked towards her, "I see Potter and Weasley finally shook you off! Took them long enough." He smirked and began to laugh but then saw something from the corner of his eyes. Something red appeared from where there wasn't red before. He looked up at it and saw that it was a girl's hair.
"Nobody asked for your opinion, Mudblood!" he said cutting off whatever Hermione was about to say and walked away towards the girl with redding hair.
"Hey," he called out to her before reaching her table. It was Kingston, she was in the same house as him and a year younger. "How'd you do that, Kingston?" He asked wondering if it was some kind of spell that he'd never heard of. There were plenty of spells he'd never heard of, but this one in particular he had never seen.
Normally Katherine wouldn't be in the library, she would be out somewhere causing trouble, or playing a prank on someone - Gryffindor's more specifically. She liked books, but not enough to sit in the library during her free time, and she didn't study excessively like some students, Hermione Granger more specifically.
Hearing the word mudblood, she flinched slightly, but didn't think much of it. Although she thought the word was rude, and unfair, it wasn't something that was new to her. Slytherin's all the time said it, but mostly Draco Malfoy, who was conveniently the one who had said it this time. He had quite a sour opinion on muggles, and muggleborns evidently.
She was too worried about the book in her hands to notice that her hair was still red; a clear sign that she was frustrated, but soon her locks turned back to their original blonde-brown color.
Then she heard Draco's voice again, instead speaking to her, and she looked over at him. Kat didn't really want to have to explain this to another person, it already freaked out her parents daily, and she didn't expect him to know about it, metamorphmagi was rare.
She raised a brow, wondering why exactly he was curious, though she supposed it was a strange thing to see someone's hair turn red, then turn back. "It's not a spell," she smirked. "It's metamorphmagi, 'means I can change my appearance when I want. I don't suppose you've ever heard of it?"

No sooner had be begun speaking to her that her hair turned from red to the usual light brown-blonde color again. Her hair had turned colors right in front of his eyes and he had no idea what to think. (OOC: 'what sorcery is this!? hahaha). His brows furrowed and the left side of his top lip went up, almost in a sneer as his eyes went thin. "I didn't ask if it was a spell, Kingston!" he spat, he sort of did. But not directly. Draco was aggravated at not knowing something and the almost smug look on her face made him infuriated.
"Meta..." Draco tried to sound out the word she'd just used," morph...magi." He shook his head, "Of course I've never heard of it. If I'd had, I wouldn't have asked you, now would I?" He said in a snarky manner. He hated it when people acted all high and mighty when they knew something he didn't.
"Alright, but how do you know how to do that?" Draco said, his voice less sharp and demanding. He wondered if his father knew about this... metamorphmagi thing. He was sure he did. His father knew everything. But why didn't he tell him about it? Perhaps it wasn't necessary. But someone who could just change their looks? How was it done? Draco was confused and intrigued. Could he do it to? If he could learn how, it would certainly make sneaking around easier!
The way he had got so angry so quickly made her smile. It wasn't that she liked getting snapped at by one of her fellow Slytherin's, and the boy that was crushing over her cousin, but did he not realize he was contradicting himself, technically? Whenever Potter or his friends didn't know, or have something Draco would rub it in their faces, and act all smug about it.
But she wasn't trying to do that. Katherine didn't need an enemy, she already had enough, but it was true, she didn't suppose that he would know about metamorphmagi, adults and students all over the wizarding world didn't know about it. When she was born and her hair already began changing color, her parents had no clue what was going on. "Easy, Draco."
Kat didn't call people by their last names, excluding her rivals, and enemies. It just sounded rude and she wouldn't want to greet any of her house mates like that. Her face wasn't smug anymore, she didn't need him snapping at her any longer. "I've always known," she shrugged. "I was born with it. And my appearance change depending on my mood, or I can change my features at will. It does come in handy when causing trouble," she smiled beguilingly, "and doing other things."

Draco pulled out the seat next to her and turned it around so that he could sit backwards on it, the back of the chair in front of his chest. He listened to her, thinking about what she was saying. He'd known Kingston a long time, too. She and Ophelia were cousins, but they were never really much alike. And he found Kingston... a little odd. She never openly said anything against mudbloods the entire he'd known her. Though, she never hung out with them either. But she wasn't like the rest of the Slytherins he hung out with. So this made her different. He didn't like different.
"Yeah, so can you teach me to do that?" he said almost snarky, but trying to become more appealing. It was difficult for him to speak to her kindly, she just... she just wasn't like him. Perhaps if she acted like she liked him, he wouldn't be so rude to her. But she wasn't like the other Slytherins who laughed at his jokes or applauded him for his nasty-ness towards the Gryffindors. She was in her own world, it seemed like.
"That would be very useful," he said agreeing with her. The word trouble made him smile at her. Perhaps she wasn't all bad. He thought about all the trouble he could get into with that magic, and all the trouble he could wiggle out of.
It was clear that he didn't like her. Why would he? He was at the top with girls fawning over him, and bodyguard-like friends ready to back him up at any time. She admired him for his sharp tongue, but then again, she wasn't fawning over him like the other girls. It seemed like Draco appreciated the easy, and easy was no fun.
Katherine liked him, but she mostly only knew him because of his one-sided love for her cousin, Ophelia. But clearly he didn't understand her little ability. It couldn't be learned, and obviously he had no reason to talk to her if there wasn't a way she could teach him. She could teach him disguises with a wand, but metamorphmagi was different.
Kat looked back at her book, still smiling, though in a more sly way. She wasn't sure what to tell him, but he wouldn't be happy, that's for sure. Looking back at him, she raised a brow. "Concentrate on what you want to change, and it will happen," she laughed. It was impossible to teach.

Draco's brows furrowed as he looked at her with skeptical eyes. "Change.. change..." he muttered before closing his eyes. Perhaps start with something easy. Maybe his eye color. That would be easy right?
"Shut your laughing, Kingston, I can't concentrate," he said as he shut his lids close even tighter. He pictured his eyes turning a different color. Maybe a red, or a green, or no... A silver! He concentrated on the color, on his eyes changing to that color.
When he opened his eyes he looked at Kingston and leaned over close to her. "Did it change?" he asked, his eyebrows raised and his mouth in a straight line as he tried not to smile or get his hopes up.

She stared, not being able to believe that he actually believed her. If all you had to do was concentrate on how you wanted to look then the whole bloody wizarding world would have it figured out. But still, it was fun to mess with him, and she was surprised that he had actually tried this out.
When he opened his eyes she just stared at him, thinking of what to say. Maybe he wasn't as boring as Kat initially thought, and she wasn't sure she wanted to outright tell him the truth yet. The witch was silent before she couldn't help but laugh.
"No," Katherine replied, crossing her arms. "But... maybe you just don't have the gift..." She gave him a disapproving look. This was technically true... it was a gift.

Draco's eyes narrowed. "You sure?" he looked around for a mirror, but found none close by. He frowned. Draco had usually been able to accomplish most things he set his mind to. No, he wasn't smart like most Ravenclaws. But he was good at magic, that much he knew for sure.
"Don't have the gift?" he sneered. "Pah! My father always said I'm gifted. Did you know that I could fly a broom when I was just a toddler?" He bragged. It was no secret he was a great flyer. Better than that cheater Potter.
"You're just not teaching me right, I want to learn how to do this, Kingston. I have to learn," he said, now completely adamant that he should learn this. It would come in handy. And as a bonus, his father would be very proud of him for learning such a useful trick.

Katherine let out a sigh, an exhausted one, because she wasn't sure what the bloody hell she was supposed to say to him. He seriously needed to brush up on his knowledge about certain special types of magic, but she couldn't blame him for not knowing.
She was prepared for some rude insults to be thrown her way if she told him the truth, but oh well, it was worth it to see him attempt to change his appearance just by thinking about it. Hilarious!
"Unfortunately, Malfoy, it can't be learned," Kat explained, opening her book again, and beginning to look through it, like she was uninterested in him. "If you're not born with the ability, then there's nothing you can do."

Draco stood up, his eyes staring her down when she began to look at her book again. He'd never been so ignored. Well, he had, but not like this-- by a Slytherine no less. They all knew better than to ignore him in such a way. Didn't Kingston knew who he was? Didn't he know who his father was? Of course she did, she was Ophelia's cousin and Ophelia was pretty much the closest friend girl he had in the school. Pansy didn't count, she was much too needy of him.
"What, am I boring you?" Draco raised his eyebrows, his arms now crossed over his chest, and a disgusted look in his face. "Perhaps you don't pay attention, Kingston, but things are about to change around here." Draco side stepped from the chair and leaned over her, one arm on the table. "So if you can't teach me, then you'll just have to do the work for me." The plan started to formulate inside his head. Piece by piece, he was putting it all together.
Draco's forefinger picked up the corner hard cover of her book and slowly closed it over. His eyes still on her, "Sorry, was that important?" His voice sarcastic. He didn't care about what she was studying. Now that she couldn't teach me this trick for him to use, he would use her.
Katherine Kingston [TAG] 243 [WORDS] I didn't even realize I hadn't responded to this! @_@ [NOTES]
She laughed abruptly at his words, the way he thought he was so much better. And maybe he was, but Katherine wouldn't bow down so easily. She tore her eyes away from the awfully boring book, and looked at him as he stood. "Not exactly," she replied to his first question. He wasn't boring, but he wasn't fun yet either.
Hearing his proposal, or rather, his demand, Kat smiled. He wanted her to do his trouble for him? How fun, but why would she risk her reputation at Hogwarts for him? Didn't he realize that if he manipulated her he would most likely get a lecture from Ophelia, who was his undying crush? "Seriously, Draco?" she stood. "You think you can just snap your fingers and I'll do all you dirty work?" Kat smiled, but not in the mocking or amused way - he was a little bit interesting. "I'm not Pansy."
Seeing what he had done to the book, she frowned slightly. How rude. Well, she wouldn't be the one getting in trouble if the librarian noticed. Katherine slipped it back on the shelf, and looked at him again.
