The year is 1994, and for the first time in ages, the Triwizard Tournament is occurring. Hogwarts has been chosen to host this momentous event, much to the delight of its students. Unfortunately, due to previous injuries and deaths, only those of age may submit their name to the Goblet of Fire, vastly reducing the number of students who are able. That doesn't mean that younger students can't try. Also doesn't mean that they'll succeed. What does the Triwizard Tournament have in store for the schools of Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons? Who will be chosen to participate, and most importantly, will they all come out in one piece?

It was still quite early in the morning. Harry was one of the first to rise today, which wasn't usually part of his routine but seeing as there were foreign students about, he was curious. His eyes were slightly red from lack of sleep and he was yawning quite a bit, but he knew very well he wouldn’t be able to go back to sleep. Breakfast had already started so he made his way out through the common room.
As he entered the Great Hall, he took note of the ceiling - the sky looked as though it promised sunlight later. He made a mental note to walk down and visit Hagrid later that day. His eyes scanned through the students for Hermione. When he didn't spot her, he decided to start his breakfast alone. He nodded and smiled to his familiar classmates as he found a secluded spot. He was still quite tired, so he preferred to sit alone at this time anyway. He might even take this time to write Sirius. After he decided to have oatmeal and waffles, Harry looked around again. He noticed just how many Durmstrang and Beauxbatons there were. They definitely came from two very different places in the world. He remembered Hermione mentioning the Durmstrang students descending from somewhere very cold. Also, from the looks of the students from Beauxbatons, they seemed sort of uptight. He couldn't help but be thankful he attended Hogwarts. Nonetheless, he wouldn't mind getting to know a few new faces. They seemed interesting enough. His train of thought was broken when he realized that he had been zoning out on one of the Beauxbaton students. She was quite pretty, even with the perplexed look she was giving him. Harry blinked, felt his cheeks flush, and broke the stare he had unintentionally given. He looked down at his food and heard a giggle erupt from the same direction he had been staring off at.
At this, he decided he was going to write Sirius later, when it was easier to concentrate. He noticed an abandoned Daily Prophet a few feet away and slid down to claim it. The Triwizard Tournament was mentioned of course. His excitement peaked as he read on. He let his mind wander off to the Triwizard Tournament. He wondered what kind of tasks the champions would deal with. What he was most excited about was joining Ron and Hermione in the cheering crowd to watch the action. Usually, while playing Quidditch, for instance, he obviously wasn’t in the crowd. It’d be a nice change for him to be able to speculate an event. This was certainly going to be an exciting year.
Starting to feel more awake, he sipped on his pumpkin juice and continued turning through the rest of the Prophet, waiting for either Hermione or Ron to make their way down to join him.

The floor under our feet whispers out,
"Come on in, come on in, where it all begins."
Ginny’s morning began before almost everyone else’s, mainly because she was a horribly light sleeper. Someone in the dorm started to snore, and it immediately woke her up. Because her bed was angled just right, the morning sun had almost reached her bed. She groaned as she knew that she would never get back to sleep. She tried to put the pillow over her head, but the snores seemed to penetrate even the thickest of fortresses. Ginny rolled out of bed, her hair a disaster from tossing and turning. She had begun to have nightmares about what had happened in her first year all over again. She didn’t talk about it because it made her feel like an idiot, but near death experiences with the Dark Lord were hard to forget. She hadn’t slept soundly since. The Triwizard Tournament renewed her deepest fears. Any time anything drew more attention to Hogwarts than Harry Potter her heart tended to beat a little quicker.
After getting dressed, she made her way to the Great Hall. She looked lively and awake. She had grown used to her lack of sleep and therefore always seemed bright eyed. Besides, to Ginny, being sleepy was just a state of mind. If she didn’t think about it, it didn’t seem to affect her as much. Her eyes scanned the Gryffindor table and her eyes immediately landed on Harry. She never knew where she fell with him. Over the past few years she had grown more comfortable with him, but she didn’t know what she was in his eyes. Was she just Ron’s little sister, or did he see her as an actual friend on her own right? She had become abundantly aware that Harry wasn’t as interested in her as she was with him and she had become okay with it. It still stung, but she tried to not let it show. What was the point in moping? She felt happy just to have him in her life. Besides, she was only thirteen. It wasn’t like she needed them to get married or anything.
“Hi Harry,” she said in a friendly tone as she sat across from him. She looked him over for a moment, unsure if he actually wanted her there or if he had been hoping for someone else. Ginny forced her insecurities down. If she never tried to be his friend, she never would be. As she got to know him and not just the idolized person that she originally had a crush on, she became aware that she did genuinely like him in his own right. She saw bits of herself in him and she wondered if he could see them too. “Anything other than the Triwizard Tournament in there, or more of the same ignoring the real issues?” she asked light-heartedly as she buttered an English muffin. “Not that the Triwizard Tournament isn’t exciting, but there must be more going on out there than this, hasn’t there?”

Harry had just finished reading the last article about the Tournament when Ginny joined him. He was glad actually. It wasn’t in his usual interest to sit around reading all morning. That was more Hermione’s nature.
“Nothing too exciting, that they care to mention anyway,” he responded to her question about the Prophet. “It goes on saying how exciting this year at Hogwart’s will be and how the main theme of it all is unity between different schools.” He paused. “Although so far, I’ve noticed each school seems to mostly stay with their own.” He couldn’t really blame them, he figured. He wondered what it’d be like to go to a different school for a whole year. It can’t be too easy. He folded up the Prophet and finished the last of his pumpkin juice.
Harry, who was completely oblivious to Ginny’s feelings for him, watched as Cho Chang made her way to the Ravenclaw table. She greeted her usual friends and sat so her back faced him. He couldn't help but wonder what it'd be like to sit with her. His eyes found Ginny again, who was looking at him. He wondered if she noticed who he was starting at.
“So, er, I wonder if Hermione or Ron is up yet.” Harry suddenly felt rude for saying this. “I suppose not many are early risers like you and I are today,” he added with a small smile. He didn’t want Ginny to think he didn’t enjoy her company. He certainly did. He appreciated the fact that she was less shy and jumpy around him than she used to be. Obviously her being more comfortable around him meant that she didn’t like him like she used to, Harry decided.

And I know what she thinks when she looks at me,
When she looks with such despair
You're not the only one around here who needs a bit of fresh air
Ginny reached forward and grabbed a nearby apple and bit into it. She didn’t know how Hogwarts always seemed to have the freshest of food. Even though her mum was excellent at cooking and finding great food, nothing ever compared to what was served at Hogwarts... even just an apple. She glanced over her shoulder at a group of Durmstrang students sitting at the Slytherin table. “It’s unfortunate, isn’t it? I mean, none of them would talk with me, I’m too young, but I could imagine it’s disappointing for the older students. When would we have this opportunity again to meet students from some of the other schools? I guess it’s just easier sticking with the familiar,” she responded. She always felt like the Durmstrang students looked like they were plotting something. They always seemed to lean their heads in together a little too far and keep their voices quiet. It wasn’t like most students at Hogwarts would understand them anyway.
Ginny saw Harry’s eyes drift past her and she glanced over her shoulder at Cho Chang. She was beautiful and she could see why Harry was looking at her, but it did sting. Even though she was trying her best to move past her childish crush, it still didn’t feel good for Harry to literally look past her for another girl. She wanted to be more like Hermione and maybe even make a joke about it, but she couldn’t think of anything funny about it. It didn’t help when his next words were wondering where his other friends were.
“Yeah, but I’m sure Hermione is somewhere. She’s usually up before all the other girls,” Ginny explained. “She probably gets in a class worth of homework done before breakfast. You can’t deny that at least she makes good use of her time.” She took a sip of her own drink. “And I don’t think Ron wakes up until ten minutes before classes by the look of his hair in the morning,” she commented. “You’re not usually an early riser are you? When you’re over at our house you always seem to get up later.” She almost blushed. It made it seem like she paid attention to where he was when he was at her house. It had always distracted her that Harry Potter was only a few walls away. She couldn’t help but realize that her eleven year old self would be shocked that her thirteen year old self was having a relatively normal conversation with him without her making a fool of herself. It was all about baby steps.

Harry was glad Ginny didn’t seem to have taken his comment to heart, as she explained her theories about Ron and Hermione’s whereabouts.
“You’re not usually an early riser are you? When you’re over at our house you always seem to get up later.”
Harry nodded in agreement. “Definitely not, but I woke early and couldn’t get back to sleep,” he shrugged. “I suppose I was curious about what the different students were like.” Harry paused. “Not as though they’re something to gawk at, but I’ve really only met wizards and witches from London.”
It was true. Harry wasn’t brought up around magical folk. In fact, his aunt and uncle made sure that they steered Harry as far away from magic as possible while he was with them each summer. If they could control his very own thoughts, Harry was sure they’d erase any tiny thought of magic they could. It just didn’t do for them.
That’s exactly why he enjoyed staying at The Burrow any chance he could. Sure, it was crowded and not the tidiest. But it was the closest thing to home Harry had ever felt, besides Hogwarts. He took awe in each little thing Ron’s mom did for the family. To her, they were just typical tasks that needed to be done. However, one couldn’t help but watch in amusement as she waved her wand about the house, making sure everything was done and clean. He also admired Arthur for the amount of pride he took in his job at the Ministry. The Weasley’s really were a pleasant family and Harry was thankful to be so welcomed by them.
Harry grinned at Ginny as he reminisced about The Burrow. He didn’t know what it was today, but Ginny seemed a lot prettier than she usually did. The way her hair fell around her face was certainly appealing. He stopped and realized this was now the third girl he had caught himself looking at this morning (even if the first was an accident). Maybe he was starting to notice girls a lot more than he used to. He was fourteen, after all.
Harry scolded himself now. Ginny? He could never. She was his best friend’s little sister. He had never actually considered Ginny in anyway more than a friend. But maybe.. no, he told himself. He simply couldn’t. Ron would wring his neck for even having these thoughts. He'd never tell him, he decided.
